2017 NFL Draft Second Round

By Chris Malumphy

The second day of the 2017 NFL Draft began with the Green Bay Packers selecting cornerback Kevin King from Washington with a pick previously obtained from the Cleveland Browns. The Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to select tackle Cam Robinson from Alabama to help block for running back Leonard Fournette and further add to the power that Tom Coughlan wants the team to have. The Seahawks drafted Michigan State defensive tackle Malik McDowell. Safety Budda Baker from Washington was picked by the Cardinals after a trade with the Bears. The Bills also traded to obtain a pick to draft wide receiver Zay Jones from East Carolina.

Continuing to ignore a poor defense, the San Diego Chargers selected guard Forrest Lamp from Western Kentucky. Lamp had already signed an endorsement contract with a lamp company prior to being selected. The Chargers selection was the first in the second round that hadn't previously been traded. The Jets chose safety Marcus Maye from Florida. The Panthers added wide receiver Curtis Samuel from Ohio State to further beef up an offense that disappointed in 2016. The Minnesota Vikings added firepower to its offense by drafting Florida State running back Dalvin Cook with a pick obtained from the Bengals. The Saints took safety Marcus Williams from Utah. The Philadelphia Eagles picked Washington cornerback Sidney Jones who tore his achilles tendon at his pro day but who is expected to make a full recovery.

South Alabama tight end Gerald Everett was selected with the first pick of the Los Angeles Rams. The Chicago Bears took Ashland tight end Adam Shaheen. The Indianapolis Colts took cornerback Quincy Wilson from Florida. Linebacker Tyus Bowser of Houston was drafted by the Ravens. The Cincinnati Bengals took controversial running back Joe Mixon of Oklahoma. The Redskins took Alabama linebacker Ryan Anderson. Texas A&M safety Justin Evans was drafted by the Buccaneers. The Denver Broncos picked defensive end Demarcus Walker from Florida State.

Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer, considered a potential top pick entering the 2016 season, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland-based scribe Tony Grossi said "Good things come to those who wait." The Browns draft now looks excellent with the selection of defensive end Myles Garrett, jack-of-all-trades Jabrill Peppers, tight end David Njoku and quarterback DeShone Kizer.

The Detroit Lions picked defensive back Teez Tabor from Florida. Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan was taken by the Dolphins. The Giants added Dalvin Tomlinson, a defensive tackle from Alabama. The Raiders selected Connecticut defensive back Obi Melifonwu. Vanderbilt linebacker Zach Cunningham was drafted by the Texans. Center Ethan Pocic from LSU will try to improve the Seahawks offensive line. The Chiefs liked Villanova defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon.

Colorado defensive back Chidobe Awuzie joins the Dallas Cowboys. Defensive back Josh Jones was drafted by the Packers from North Carolina State. The Steelers pick wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster from USC. Temple guard Dion Dawkins was added by the Bills with a pick obtained from the Falcons. Another guard, Taylor Moton of Western Michigan, went next to the Panthers with a pick obtained from New England closing out the second round.
