32 Compensatory Picks Among 2012 NFL Draft Selections
By Chris Malumphy
NFL teams drafted 32 players with compensatory draft picks during the 2012 NFL Draft. The league awards compensatory selections based on a complex formula that provides compensation to teams that lost more or better free agents than it acquired the prior year. For 2012, the Oakland Raiders were awarded the first compensatory picks, a choice at the end of the third round. The Raiders used that pick, the 95th overall, to select guard Tony Bergstrom from Utah.
Fifteen teams received compensatory picks and 17 teams were shut out. Compensatory picks were not eligible to be traded before or during the draft. The Cleveland Browns, the New York Jets and the Green Bay Packers each received four picks. The Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers were awarded three picks each. The Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens received two choices. The Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, and St. Louis Rams received one additional pick.
Teams that did not receive compensatory draft picks included: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots.
