Interesting article on Mickey McBride, the original owner of the Cleveland Browns. McBride owned the Cleveland Yellow Cab Company in the 1930s and 1940s and used his wealth to form the Cleveland Browns in 1946, hiring Paul Brown as the first coach. Among the many innovations in those early years when the Browns dominated the All-America Football Conference and then the NFL was the creation of the "taxi squad" where the team would stash players who were not on the current roster, but might be wanted by Coach Brown on short notice, by paying them to drive the company cabs.
