2015 NFL Draft Round One
By Chris Malumphy
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select quarterback Jameis Winston from Florida State with the first pick in the NFL Draft. With the Philadelphia Eagles apparently not offering enough in a trade, the Tennessee Titans used the second pick in the draft on Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. Winston was the Heisman Trophy winner in 2013 and Mariota won it in 2014. The first defensive player in the draft, Dante Fowler a linebacker from Florida, was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Oakland Raiders, always feeling the need for speed, drafted Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper. The Washington Redskins drafted Iowa tackle Brandon Scherff to provide their quarterbacks with much needed protection. The Chicago Bears tried to fill the whole left at wide receiver when Brandon Marshall left by selecting 6'3" Kevin White from West Virginia. Clemson linebacker Vic Beasley was picked by the Atlanta Falcons. The New York Giants followed by taking tackle Ereck Flowers from Miami. The St. Louis Rams discounted Georgia running back Todd Gurley's injury and selected him with the 10th pick in the draft.
Corneback Trae Waynes was drafted by the Vikings by Michigan State. The Cleveland Browns with many holes and horrible at stopping the run in 2014, picked defensive tackle Danny Shelton of Washington. The New Orleans Saints draft 6'7" tackle Andrus Peat of Stanford to provide Drew Brees with some protection during his waning years. Miami gave quarterback Ryan Tannehill something to cheer about when the Dolphins picked Louisville wide receiver DeVante Parker. The San Diego charges moved up with a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to grab Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon. The Houston Texans drafted corner back Kevin Johnson from Wake Forest. Defensive tackle Arik Armstead of Oregon was selected by the 49ers with a pick obtained in the trade with San Diego. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Washington cornerback Marcus Peters. The Cleveland Browns, with their second selection in the first round, picked the versatile Cameron Erving who could fit almost anywhere on the line but who played center at Florida State in 2014. He will likely challenge on the right side of the Cleveland line, either guard or tackle, in 2015 and could replace center Alex Mack if he decides to leave the Browns in 2016. After failing to trade up to obtain quarterback Marcus Mariota, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted USC wide receiver Nelson Agholor.
Texas A&M tackle Cedric Ogbuehl was taken by the Bengals with the 21st player in the draft. The Steelers love defense and defensive end Alvin Dupree of Kentucky met their specifications. The Broncos traded up to get the Lions pick and selected Missouri defensive end Shane Ray. Tackle D.J. Humphries of Florida went to the Arizona Cardinals. The Carolina Panthers drafted linebacker Shaq Thompson from Washington. The Baltimore Ravens picked up one of the speediest wide receivers available when it drafted Breshad Perriman from Central Florida.
