2017 NFL Draft First Round

By Chris Malumphy

With the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Myles Garrett, defensive end from Texas A&M. The Chicago Bears trade up with the San Francisco 49ers in order to draft quarterback Mitchell Trubisky from North Carolina State. The 49ers drafted Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas with one of the picks they obtained from the Bears. Trading down one spot netted the 49ers three extra picks. The Bears shocked the Browns and others who had their eyes on Trubisky with later picks by trading up to grab him earlier than many thought warranted.

LSU running back went to the Jacksonville Jaguars as head man Tom Coughlin strives to build a solid squad not so dependent on the erratic Blake Bortles. The New York Jets, who have many needs including, most prominently, quarterback, picked safety Jamal Adams from LSU. Speedy offense came next with the San Diego Chargers picking wide receiver Mike Williams from Clemson, the Carolina Panthers drafting Standford all-round athlete Christian McCaffrey and the Cincinnati Bengals taking the fastest man at the combine, wide receiver John Ross from Washington. The Kansas City Chiefs sent a package of picks to the Buffalo Bills, including next year's number one, to select quarterback Pat Mahomes from Texas Tech.

In hopes of improving the second worst defense in the league, the New Orleans Saints picked cornerback Marshon Lattimore of Ohio State. To the disappointment of Cleveland fans, but par for the course, the Browns traded down with the Houston Texans and the Texans got the quarterback they needed in Clemson's Deshaun Watson. The Arizona Cardinals bolstered their defense by adding Temple linebacker Haason Reddick. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett who had more sacks and tackles last year, as well as for their careers, than number one pick Myles Garrett. The Indianapolis Colts took Ohio State safety Malik Hooker. Alabama cornerback Marion Humphrey goes to the Ravens. The Washington Redskins followed by taking another member of the Crimson Tide, defensive end Jonathan Allen. Cornerback Adores' Jackson of USC was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with their second choice in the first round. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave Jameis Winston another target by drafting Alabama tight end O.J. Howard. The Denver Broncos selected Utah tackle Garrett Bolles.

Florida linebacker Jarrad Davies was picked by the Detroit Lions. The Miami Dolphins added Missouri defensive end Charles Harris. Mississippi tight end was selected by the New York Giants. The Oakland Raiders came to the defense of Ohio State defensive back Gareon Conley. The Cleveland Browns took Michigan's Jabrill Peppers, perhaps the man without a real position. The Atlanta Falcons traded with the Seattle Seahawks to pick linebacker Takkarist McKinley from UCLA. With the pick obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills took defensive back Tre'Davious White from LSU.

Defensive end Taco Charlton of Michigan will line up for the Dallas Cowboys. The Browns put together a package to trade up with the Green Bay Packers to select Miami tight end David Njoku. The Pittsburgh Steelers may have come up with yet another good linebacker when they tabbed T.J. Watt from Wisconsin. The 49ers traded with the Falcons to draft Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster. The New Orleans Saints finished the first round by picking Wisconsin tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

Colleges with multiple first round picks included: Alabama four (Marion Humphrey, Jonathan Allen, O.J. Howard, Reuben Foster), Ohio State three (Marshon Lattimore, Malik, Gareon Conley), LSU 3 (Leonard Fournette, Jamal Adams, Tre'Davious White), Stanford 2 (Christian McCaffrey, Haason Reddick), Wisconsin 2 (T.J. Watt, Ryan Ramczyk), Clemson 2 (Mike Williams, Deshaun Watson), Michigan 2 (Jabrill Peppers, Taco Charlton).

Teams with multiple first round picks included: Browns three (Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers, David Njoku), 49ers two (Solomon Thomas, Reuben Foster), Saints two (Marshon Lattimore, Ryan Ramczyk), Titans two (Corey Davis, Adoree' Jackson).

Teams without a first round pick included: the Seattle Seahawks, the Los Angeles Rams, the Minnesota Vikings, the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have the first pick in the second round by virtue of their trade with the Browns. Running back Joe Mixon of Oklahoma might be under consideration.

The first round included eight defensive backs, six defensive ends, five linebackers, four wide receivers, three tight ends, three quarterbacks, two offensive tackles and one running back.
