32 Compensatory Draft Picks Awarded to 13 Teams for 2014 NFL Draft
By Chris Malumphy
The NFL has awarded a total of 32 compensatory draft choices to 13 teams for the 2014 NFL Draft. Compensatory draft picks are awarded to teams who lost more free agents than they signed the preceding year. For 2014, the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets will each receive four compensatory draft picks, the Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams were awarded three compensatory picks, the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers get two and the New England Patriots, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers will have one compensatory choice.
Historically, compensatory choices have tended to be awarded to better teams who tend to lose the most free agents, sometimes by choice, which negates a primary goal of the draft, which is to help balance competition. Of the 13 teams receiving compensatory picks in 2014, 7 made the playoffs in 2012 or 2013 and 10 have been in the playoffs since 2011. The New York Jets, St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys are the only teams with compensatory picks who failed to reach the playoffs during the past three seasons.
Compensatory picks are awarded at the end of rounds three through seven. Teams are not permitted to trade compensatory draft picks. The final compensatory choice, which will be the 256th and last player selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, will go to the Houston Texans and the player selected will thereafter be known as Mr. Irrelevant and will be feted in Newport Beach, California, where, according to Wikipedia, "they enjoy a golf tournament, a regatta, a roast giving advice to the new draftee, and a ceremony awarding him the Lowsman Trophy." The most recent Mr. Irrelevant of note is Kansas City Chiefs placekicker Ryan Succup, who was a compensatory draft selection taken with the last pick in the 2007 draft.
