College Statistics for Top QBs Available in 2014 NFL Draft

By Chris Malumphy

The 2014 NFL Draft quarterback crop does not yet have a clear standout. Moreover, fewer than a handful of the top 10 quarterback prospects have a key skill that has been just as essential as being able to pass in the past three drafts -- mobility.

The top quarterbacks drafted during the past three years had one attribute that was often overlooked in the past when teams overwhelmingly preferred pocket passers -- the ability to run The top performing quarterbacks drafted since 2011 include: Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III and Andy Dalton. Each has over 600 yards rushing, except for Dalton: Newton 2,032,; Griffin 1,034; Wilson 1,028; Kaepernick 937; Luck 632; and Dalton 455. Even the lesser talents who've been able to break into the starting lineup have been mobile: Christian Ponder 623; Jake Locker 502; Ryan Tannehill 445; Geno Smith 366; and Nick Foles 263. Even the poor passers and injured have been able to run: Terrelle Pryor 627 and EJ Manuel 186. Only Blaine Gabbert 186; Brandon Weeden 155; and Mike Glennon 37 seem to be stuck in mud. Of course, even they fare favorably to the old guard who over the past three seasons have rushed as follows: Peyton Manning -25; Eli Manning 81; Tony Romo 133; Drew Brees 143; Philip Rivers 148; and Tom Brady 159. Remember, those are three year totals, except for Peyton who missed 2012.

Of the top 10 quarterbacks available in the 2014 NFL Draft, only Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel has demonstrated great running ability and sufficient passing skills. Clemson's Tajh Boyd and Wyoming's Brett Smith have shown running ability but the question for them will be whether their passing is up to NFL standards. Blake Bortles has two seasons with rushing yardage in the high 200s, but the rest of the top prospects have never rushed for 200 yards in a single season. Teddy Bridgewater didn't amass a total of 200 yards rushing in three seasons as a starter.

The success of mobile quarterbacks over the past few years has primed the NFL and its fans for quarterbacks who can keep plays alive and take control of a game with both their arms and their legs. Innovative coaches like Chip Kelly and Jim Harbaugh have paved the way for mobile quarterbacks to be accepted like never before. Unfortunately, running ability doesn't seem to be a strong point of most of the top quarterbacks available in the 2014 draft.
