Draft Status of 2013 Associated Press All Pro Team

By Chris Malumphy

The Associated Press named 62 players to its NFL 2013 All Pro team. Well over half (39) of the All Pros were selected in either the 1st or 2nd round of an NFL Draft. First round draft picks filled 29 (47%) of the All Pro spots while 2nd round selections grabbed 10 (16%) more positions. Seven 3rd rounders, three 4th round choices, three players selected in the 5th round, two players taken in the 6th round and one 7th rounder also made the All Pro team. Seven undrafted players were also honored by being named to the All Pro team.

Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning was a unanimous selection. Manning was the first player selected in the 1998 draft. The only other top draft pick to make the 2013 All Pro team was Bills' defensive end Mario Williams, selected by Houston with the first choice in 2006.

That only two of the last 16 top picks made the 2013 All Pro teams says a lot about both the inability of teams to draft well and the mercurial and short careers of NFL players. Consider the top draft choices taken since Manning was selected first in 1998 who did not make the 2013 All Pro team: QB Tim Couch, DE Courtney Brown, QB Michael Vick, QB David Carr, QB Carson Palmer, QB Eli Manning, QB Alex Smith, QB JaMarcus Russell, T Jake Long, QB Matthew Stafford, QB Sam Bradford, QB Cam Newton, QB Andrew Luck and T Eric Fisher. Couch, Brown and Russell are already out of the league. Carr has rarely gotten on the field since he last started a few games in 2007. Vick and Long were injured and both their playing futures are hazy at the moment. Bradford was also hurt, but will return next year as a starter. Palmer and Eli Manning both started but combined for a whopping 49 interceptions and their careers appear to be headed downward. Newton and Luck continued to star, but the still young Stafford remains horribly erratic. It's too early to tell how brightly Fisher's star will shine.

The undrafted All Pro players included both fullbacks, Carolina's Mike Tolbert and Oakland's Marcel Reece, Eagles' tackle Jason Peters, Cincinnati linebacker Vontaze Burfict, place kickers Justin Tucker (Ravens) and Matt Prater (Broncos) and Rams' punter Johnny Hekker.

Two players selected in supplemental drafts also made the All Pro team: Browns' wide receiver Josh Gordon, taken with a 2nd round pick in the 2012 and 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks, taken with a 3rd round pick by the Bengals in 2006.

At draft time, it appears that it is easiest to spot talent at the defensive line and offensive tackle positions. Eight of the ten defensive lineman named All Pro were 1st round choices. Only the Panthers' Greg Hardy, a 6th rounder, and the Titans Jurrell Casey, a 6th round pick, broke the mold. Three of the four offensive tackles were 1st round choices, the only exception being the undrafted Jason Peters.
