Failure Rates for Even the Top Quarterbacks are Surprisingly High
By Chris Malumphy
It is the silly season for NFL Draft pundits. Fans eagerly await the draft and lust for the media to provide them with all the info it can. Fans of downtrodden teams as well as those following teams in transition are most thirsty for information regarding the most important position on the field: quarterback. Quarterback is typically the only position that can truly change the fortunes of a franchise, reviving teams that have hit rock bottom and catapulting mediocre teams into playoff worthy aspirants.
There is a downside to this thirst for knowledge, however. It is often difficult to identify more than the top two or three best quarterbacks in the draft, yet newspapers, blogs and talk shows have space and time to fill and readers and listeners to satisfy. Therefore they often talk up quarterbacks beyond the top one or two who may also be seen to have at least some potential. We all know that Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert are highly touted for the 2020 NFL Draft. But we are also hearing more and more regarding Jordan Love, Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm, Jalen Hurts and a ream of others. What is the likelihood that any of this second-tier quarterbacks will have much impact, especially if Burrow, Tagovailoa and Herbert are indeed the three most talented. While there may be a Tom Brady or Russell Wilson available after the top two or three quarterbacks are selected, the overwhelming probability is that those drafted later will never achieve much success. I'll provide a few simple benchmarks below that will illustrate the futility involved in expecting too much from those later choices. For instance, did you know that 50% of the players who were the second quarterback selected in a draft from the past 20 years have failed to throw 100 touchdown passes in their careers. That 50% will rise higher if Robert Griffin, Marcus Mariota, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, Patrick Mahomes or Carson Wentz end their career before reaching that total. While no one doubts Mahomes and Wentz, it appears likely that Griffin and perhaps even Mariota will fall short of the mark and who knows what the future will be for Darnold and Jones.
Quarterbacks are the most highly scouted and thoroughly evaluated players in the draft. No position is scrutinized down to its finest attributes as is the spot behind center.
Can the potential draftee make all the throws? Are his fundamentals sound? Is he mobile? Does he process things quickly? Will he stand in there and take a hit when you need a big gain, or will he check down or flee the pocket prematurely? Can he lead men? When the going gets tough, does he remain tough and positive? Does he have a history of injuries? Was his dad a head coach? Is he too tall or too short? Is he too thin to take the punishment or does he tend to become complacently out of shape? What size are his hands? What's his Wonderlic score? Will he be the first-in and last-out of the practice facilities? Did his teammates go to his birthday party?
At draft time there are typically one or two standouts at the position. Sometimes several vying for the top stop and occasionally no one appears to be worth a high pick. With all the misdirection put out by the teams, it is often difficult to tell how the players are truly rated and whether there is any consensus or even a majority view of those rankings.
Over the past 20 years, anywhere from seven to 17 quarterbacks have been selected in individual drafts. But after the first two or three quarterbacks are taken, what are the chances of success for those taken later on? And is there much difference among even those first few picked?
Certainly each draft is different with some years including a plethora of talent at the position and other years a dirth. The charts below attempt to provide the raw data to answer the question of how deep a team can go down the list of potential quarterbacks before the probability of success becomes nearly non-existent.
There are many ways of measuring success and much of that is dependent upon the team and its own assessment of its needs. Needy teams may be seeking an immediate starter. Others might be looking for a developmental project, long-term backup or practice squad fodder. Some might just be tempted to jump in and draft a quarterback because they feel other teams have underestimated a player's talent.
This project makes the simple (and admittedly naive) assumption that all quarterbacks are drafted with at least the outside hope that they can one day become viable players. Even then it is hard to know what would constitute a successful career. Here are a few standards that I propose based on a few simple counting statistics that are readily available and understandable to all fans. Drafted quarterbacks demonstrate at least some success, even if it might be described as mediocre, if they have careers with some of the following traits:
- 2,000+ pass attempts (which equates to 3-5 years as a starter)
- 10,000+ yards passing (which can easily be accomplished in 3-4 years as a starter)
- 100+ touchdown passes (which even mediocre starters should reach in 4-5 seasons as a starter)
Achieving those benchmarks doesn't mean the quarterback is good. However, failure to reach those totals indicates the draft pick, with few exceptions, likely was wasted or could have better been used on a player at another position. Depending upon where the quarterback was drafted and who was selected afterwards, such a failure often becomes a rather miserable reminder for the player, coach, scouting director, GM, team and fans. No one likes someone who doesn't meet expectations and everyone has high hopes for quarterbacks wherever picked but especially for those selected early in the draft.
This article will use touchdown passes to analyze the quarterbacks selected in the past 20 regular NFL Drafts. Feel free to view the tables below with the other criteria in mind. I have not included the 2011 supplemental draft in which Terrelle Pryor entered the league as a quarterback since he was the only player picked in that draft and he was unable to make a significant mark as a quarterback. In the tables, names that are boldface indicate that the player threw at least one pass in 2019.
As an example of how to read the table, take a look at the row with data for the third quarterback selected from 2000 to 2019. The table shows there were 20 such players. Five of them have already thrown a minimum of 2,000 pass attempts which equals 25%. The current failure rate for throwing 2,000 passes by the third quarterback drafted is 50%. That means that 10 of the 20 quarterbacks have not reached that benchmark AND did not throw a single pass in 2019, which likely means their careers are over, although there is an outside chance that someone like Paxton Lynch could miraculously resuscitate his career. Thus 15 (75%) of the quarterbacks picked third are accounted for in that category with five remaining who may or may not reach the mark. So the final success rate for throwing at least 2,000 career passes will be somewhere between 25% to 50% while the failure rate will be somewhere between 50% to 75%. Checking the names of the quarterbacks in the tables even further below should provide additional information to help better determine what the final success and failure rates are likely to be.

Among the 1st quarterbacks drafted in each of the past 20 years, twelve have already surpassed 100 career touchdown passes. Jared Goff is likely to hit the century mark this season. Barker Mayfield and Kyler Murray are currently on pace to reach 100 within a few years. It is becoming somewhat doubtful that Mitchell Trubisky will achieve that number, especially if he loses his starting job to Nick Foles or someone else in the next season or two. David Carr, Vince Young, JeMarcus Russell and EJ Manuel have already failed to hit the century mark in touchdown passes. So the failure rate for the first quarterback selected in a draft is at least 20% and perhaps higher.

Just four of the second quarterbacks selected in the draft in the past 20 years have reached 100 touchdown passes in their careers thus far: Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco. Carson Wentz and Patrick Mahomes will likely surpass 100 this season. Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold are currently on pace. Marcus Mariota needs to regain a starting job to have a shot and Robert Griffin is a ghost of his rookie self. Ten have failed: Mark Sanchez, Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, Geno Smith, Jake Locker, Tim Tebow, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Johnny Manziel and Giovanni Carmazzi. Thus the failure rate for the second quarterback selected in the draft is at least 50%, with the likelihood that it will become 60% or more. Taking the second quarterback in the draft is fraught with peril, especially if it appears to be a mediocre year for the position in the draft.

Third quarterbacks selected fall even further behind. Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler and Ryan Tannehill have over 100 career touchdown passes. Deshaun Watson could reach that total with a strong performance this year although the loss of receiver DeAndre Hopkins won't help. Getting a starting position will certainly aid Teddy Bridgewater's chances of reaching 100, but it is by no means a sure thing, or even a probability, as he now stands at just 38. Buffalo's Josh Allen will need to pick up the pace, averaging 15 touchdown passes per season thus far, although his first year was slowed both by not winning the job early as well as by injury. The future is yet uncertain for Dwayne Haskins. Blaine Gabbert and Mike Glennon hang on but have become unlikely to toss even a few more touchdowns. Those who've failed to reach the mark are: Jason Campbell, Josh Freeman, Kyle Boller, Patrick Ramsey, Quincy Carter, Kevin Kolb, Chris Redman, Paxton Lynch, Jimmy Clausen, Brian Bohm and Garrett Grayson. The failure rate for the third quarterback selected in the draft is at least 55% and most probably 65-70% or more.

After the first three quarterbacks selected, the chance of tossing 100 touchdown passes in a career becomes negligible. Among the fourth quarterbacks drafted, only Derek Carr has reached the goal in the past twenty years. Aged Josh McCown will fall short with 98 unless he miraculously gets another on-field opportunity. If he actually becomes the Bronco's franchise quarterback, Drew Lock could have a chance. But all the other fourth quarterbacks have failed with the best of the lot being: Chad Henne, Rex Grossman, Christian Ponder, and J.P. Losman. Let's just say that the failure rate for the fourth quarterback selected is around 90%.

Among the fifth quarterbacks selected Andy Dalton, Matt Schaub and Marc Bulger topped 100. Jimmy Garoppolo and Lamar Jackson could reach that goal as well. But no others. So in a statistical anomaly, the fifth quarterbacks may on average be doing better at the moment than the one selected directly ahead of them. Still, the failure rate is at least 75%.
Only Russell Wilson exceeded 100 touchdown passes among the sixth quarterbacks selected. Colin Kapernick was getting reasonably close but probably needed two more years as a starter. No others are on the horizon or were even remotely close. Failure rate is 95%.
Tom Brady and Kyle Orton (just barely) are seventh quarterbacks to reach the goal. Nick Foles will have a chance if he can wrest the starting job with the Bears from Mitch Trubisky. We await Jarrett Stidham's first touchdown pass. It appears the failure rate will be at least 85% and probably higher if Foles or Stidham don't come through.
When you get to the eighth quarterback, only Kirk Cousins has topped 100. Dak Prescott will assuredly pass it this season absent injury. Among the others, only Mike McMahon even tossed 15 touchdown passes in his career. Nine of the quarterbacks picked eighth at the position didn't even throw a pass. In 2015, no team even bothered to select the eighth quarterback. A 90% failure rate with a dirth of players even worthy of getting on the field as a back tells you everything you need to know about selecting a quarterback other teams have already passed over multiple times in the draft.

The chance of having success picking the ninth quarterback or another thereafter is infinitesimal. Only Matt Cassel, with 104 touchdown passes as a thirteenth quarterback picked in 2005, and the amazing Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has thus far tossed 210 touchdown passes after being the 14th quarterback drafted in 2005, make the grade. Gardner Minshew, who was the ninth quarterback picked in 2019, could join the group if he develops into a true starter, but at the moment that remains only a remote possibility. To show how unlikely it is to achieve success as the ninth quarterback or later, consider that only two other such quarterbacks have tossed even 50 touchdown passes during their careers: Derek Anderson (60) and Tyrod Taylor (54) who were both 11th quarterbacks selected. The 12 twelfth quarterbacks selected washed out with Matt Flynn's 17 career touchdown passes exceeding all others by 15. None of the 15th (there were 3), 16th (2) or 17th (1) quarterbacks selected threw even a single touchdown pass, although three of those picks (Matt Mauck, Ronald Curry and Bradlee Van Pelt) combined for a career total of 39 attempts with 17 completions for 143 yards. For quarterbacks selected ninth or later, the failure to reach 100 career touchdown passes appears to be at about 97%. It just doesn't pay to wade too deep into the quarterback market when many players of the same quality are likely to be available as undrafted free agents.
