The 2024 Coaching Carousel has come to a full-stop with the Washington Commanders' hiring of Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Quinn had previously coached the Atlanta Falcons and had taken them to the Super Bowl following the 2016 season.
The Seattle Seahawks tabbed Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator Mike McDonald as their new head coach. Jim Harbaugh, who coached Michigan University to the most recent National Championship, returns to the NFL as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Harbaugh immediately becomes the active coach with the best career record in the league with a .695 winning percentage by virtue of his 44-19-1 record previously achieved with the San Francisco 49ers.
In contrast, new Atlanta Falcon's head coach Raheem Morris, will return to the head coaching ranks for the third time with a career record of 21-38 .356 which is only better than the Bears Matt Eberflus and the Cardinals Jonathan Gannon among all active coaches. Morris does have the consolation, however, of having beaten out perhaps the greatest coach of all time, Bill Belichick, for the position. Morris previously led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-2011 and the Falcons on an interim basis in 2020 .
Dave Canales, who helped resurrect quarterback Baker Mayfield's career this. past season as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneer's, has taken the top coaching spot with the Carolina Panthers and will try to get Bryce Young on track after a disappointing rookie season.
The Tennessee Titans selected Brian Callahan, previously the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, as its new head coach. The Oakland Raiders decided to stick with Antonio Pierce who went 5-4 when serving in an interim status in 2023. The New England Patriots tabbed Jerod Mayo to lead the team following the Bill Belichick era. Three of the eight vacancies available on the 2024 Coaching Carousel have now been filled. Both Pierce and Mayo are former linebackers bucking the trend in recent years in hiring offensive masterminds as head coaches. Neither the Raiders nor the Patriots have a settled QB situation. The QB situation for the Titans is less unsettled with Will Levis, and selecting Callahan for his success as an offensive coordinator, should provide Levis with additional support.
Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel and Pete Carroll are without head coaching gigs to the surprise of many.
