Coaches on the Hot Seat
By Chris Malumphy
The 2019 NFL season is about to begin and a few coaches are already on the hot seat. The Redskins' Jay Gruden and Jaguars' Doug Marrone are chief among them as is the Giants' Pat Shumur. Those are three of the four current NFL head coaches who have three or more years of head coaching experience and have losing career records. The fourth member of that group, the Jets' Adam Gase, gets a pass, of sorts, since he just joined the team this season. Overall, just seven of the 32 head coaches have losing career records. The other three are: the Bills Sean McDermott, the Lions' Matt Patricia and the 49ers Kyle Shanahan, who have only two, one and two years under their belts, respectively. They too should be feeling the heat, but maybe not so much. With six first-time head coaches entering the 2019 season, that leaves 19 of the 32 head coaches with winning career records including 10 with records over .600. The competition is stiff in a field where winning is everything.

* Includes Arians' 9-3 record with the Indianapolis Colts in 2012 while filling in for Coach Chuck Pagano who was battling cancer. The NFL has attributed that record to Pagano even though he was not on the sidelines for those games. |
