NFL Minority Coaching Records
By Chris Malumphy
In the modern era of professional football, the first minority to become head coach was Tom Flores for the Raiders in 1979. I don't think the casual football fan viewed Flores as a minority from their seats in front of the television as he paced the sidelines, but Flores is of Mexican descent, and he became the first minority to win the Super Bowl as a player (backup to Chiefs QB Len Dawson in SB IV), assistant coach on the Raiders staff for SB XI and head coach for the Raiders in SBs XV and XVIII. Flores was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 for his coaching success rather than his play at quarterback.
Another Hall of Famer, Art Shell became the first modern era Afro-American head coach when he was hired by the Raiders in 1989. Shell was elected to the Hall of Fame for his skills as a tackle at around the same time he became head coach. Shell had a respectable regular season coaching record of 56-52 (0.519) and went 2-3 (0.400) in the playoffs. It is no small point that both Flores and Shell were hired by Al Davis who was known to provide opportunities to minorities and who also appointed the first woman, Amy Trask, as CEO of an NFL franchise.
But neither Flores nor Shell were truly firsts. Fritz Pollard was coach (and player) of the Hammond Pros in the NFL in 1925. He was also player / coach of multiple other pro teams in the 1920s. Pollard, a halfback, was the first black player at Brown and went to the 1916 Rose Bowl. Pollard played both halfback and quarterback in the pros. The NFL removed Pollard, along with all nine black players in the league at the conclusion of the 1926 season. The league remained segregated until 1946. Pollard was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
By my count, beginning in 1979 thru the 2021 season, the NFL has had 27 minority head coaches. During that period, another 173 non-minorities have become head coaches in the league for the first time. Tallying the records of those individuals, the minority coaches have posted a combined regular season record of 1238-1220-9 (0.504). The non-minority record for those first appointed since 1979 is 7631-7631-30 (0.500). Minorities are 43-60 (0.417) in the playoffs with four Super Bowl victories while non-minorities in the sample were 361-333 (0.520) and 37 Super Bowl victories. On average, the 27 minority members coached 91.4 games and the non-minorities coached 88.4 games. The minorities averaged 6.1 complete and partial seasons versus 5.8 for non-minorities.
Included among the minority coaches are Tom Flores (Mexican descent), Ron Rivera (Mexican and Puerto Rican descent) and Robert Saleh (Lebanese descent). Those three coaches have a combined regular season record of 191-182-1 (0.512) and 11-8 (0.579) in the playoffs, including two Super Bowl victories. The 24 Afro-American head coaches are 1047-1038-8 (0.502) in the regular season and 32-52 (.381) in the playoffs with two Super Bowl victories.
Mike Tomlin (154), Tony Dungy (139), Marvin Lewis (131) and Dennis Green (113) have the most regular season wins by minority head coaches.
Dungy (0.668), Tomlin (0.643), Jim Caldwell (0.554), Green (0.546), Flores (0.527) and Rivera (0.523) have the highest regular season winning percentages.
Flores (2), Dungy and Tomlin have won Super Bowls as head coach.
While the Raiders hired the first minority head coach in 1979 as well as the first Afro-American head coach in 1989 and 24 other franchises have had at least one minority hire since then, there are still seven teams who have not yet had a minority head coach: Cowboys, Giants, Patriots, Rams, Ravens, Saints and Titans.
The last time the NFL did not have a minority head coach was 1988, the season the Raiders replaced Tom Flores with Mike Shanahan as head coach. Shanahan went 7-9 in 1988 and began 1989 going 1-3 before he was replaced by the league's first black coach since Pollard, Art Shell, who went 7-5 the rest of the season. The first season the league had more than one minority head coach was 1992 when Dennis Green (Vikings) joined Shell (Raiders) and Flores (Seahawks). The league has had multiple minority head coaches every year since reaching a peak in 2011 when eight full-season minority head coaches combined with three minorities who were appointed in mid-season to serve as head coach for 139 games. Minority head coaches combined for their most victories in 2015 going 60-36 overall behind Ron Rivera (15-1, Panthers), Marvin Lewis (12-4, Bengals), Mike Tomlin (10-6, Steelers), Todd Bowles (10-6, Jets), Jim Caldwell (7-9, Lions) and Lovie Smith (6-10, Buccaneers).
As the league prepares for the 2022 season, four teams have minority head coaches: Steelers' Mike Tomlin (entering his 16th season as a head coach), Texans' Jim Caldwell (8th), Jets' Robert Saleh (2nd), Dolphins' Mike McDaniel (1st). Tomlin will tie Marvin Lewis for the most seasons in which a minority has served as head coach. Caldwell (Colts, Lions, Texans) will join Romeo Crennel (Browns, Chiefs, Texans) as the only minorities to serve three teams as head coach.
