Quarterback Needy Quarterback Rooms

By Chris Malumphy

Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft there are some quarterback needy quarterback rooms. The 14-3 Minnesota Vikings have lost last season's comeback player of the year Sam Darnold and head into the new year with two quarterbacks who've thrown a grand total of 168 passes. Presumed starter J.J. McCarthy has yet to throw a pro pass and current back-up Brett Rypien has only tossed 168.

The Pittsburgh Steelers currently have the second least experienced quarterback room in terms of total pass attempts. Mason Rudolph has been around the block, but has generally been uninspiring. Skylar Thompson saw some action as a Dolphin, but no one suspects he'll ever be a long-term starter.

Aaron Rodgers waits in the wings, presumably preparing to join the Steelers. But he'd probably rather play for the Vikings who are much better stocked for what is likely to be Rodger's final attempt at winning a second Super Bowl. However, the Vikings might rather forge into the future with McCarthy.

Trey Lance has just joined Justin Herbert and Taylor Heinicke in the Los Angeles Chargers' quarterback QB room which is already experienced and in its prime. That Lance chose the Chargers is a bit of a wonderment since he won't unseat Herbert and may not even beat out Heinicke for the back-up role. He might be able to resurrect his career though under Jim Harbaugh who is a QB friendly coach and Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman who is well-respected and who has shown that he can develop an offense for a multi-talented quarterback. But why didn't more QB needy teams take a flyer on the 24-year old Lance?

The Cleveland Browns seemed destined to draft a quarterback. If they don't, they will have the third least experienced quarterback room with only Kenny Pickett currently available on the roster since Deshaun Watson likely won't play due to his achilles injury.

Even teams with experience quarterbacks can have sketchy quarterback rooms. Do the New York Giants have much of a future with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston? I think not. And by the time New Orleans rebuilds, will Derek Carr still be around? Take a look below. I'll wager you'll find a few other teams with iffy quarterback rooms.
